Degrees in Poland for Indian Students: How Bachelor's, Master's, Long-Cycle and PhD Work

Poland follows the European three-cycle system, with two Polish twists: engineering bachelor's take three and a half years and award the inżynier title, and some professions, such as medicine, psychology and law, are taught as five- or six-year long-cycle master's straight from school.

Grading

Polish universities grade from 2 (fail) to 5 (very good), with 3, 3.5, 4 and 4.5 in between. When you apply, the university converts your Indian percentage to this scale; the University of Gdańsk asks foreign applicants to upload documents early for that reason.

Degrees in Poland: Frequently Asked Questions

Is a three-year Polish bachelor's accepted for a master's in India?

Generally yes; Polish bachelor's degrees are 180–210 ECTS. For government jobs or further study in India you may need an AIU equivalence certificate.

Will Polish universities accept my three-year Indian degree for a master's?

Most do. The University of Gdańsk asks for at least 55% and Białystok Tech for 50% with second class; each master's programme sets its own subject requirements.

What is the difference between licencjat and inżynier?

Both are first-cycle degrees. Licencjat is the general bachelor's (three years), inżynier the engineering bachelor's (usually three and a half years).

Is a PhD in Poland free?

Yes. Doctoral schools charge no tuition and pay doctoral students a monthly stipend.
