Studying in Warsaw for Indian Students: Universities, Dorm Rents in Rupees and Life in the Capital

Warsaw is Poland's capital and largest city, with about 1.8 million people. It has more English-taught universities than any other Polish city, from the University of Warsaw and Warsaw Tech to private business schools, and the biggest job market. It is also the most expensive place to rent.

Dorms and rent

Warsaw University of Technology charges PLN 410–1,300 a month for a dorm place, about ₹9,920 to ₹31,400, and the University of Warsaw PLN 520–1,100. Places for first-year international students are limited, so apply for a dorm as soon as you accept the offer. Private universities such as Kozminski, Lazarski and Vistula mostly work with private student residences, which cost considerably more.

A room in a shared flat is the usual alternative. Areas with good metro or tram links, such as Mokotów, Ochota, Wola and Praga, are popular with students; check the commute before you sign.

Getting around

Warsaw has two metro lines, trams and buses on one ticket. A 30-day personal ticket for zones 1 and 2 costs PLN 180, or PLN 90 at the reduced rate students get with a Polish student card. Chopin Airport is inside the city and connected by train.

Weather

The 1991–2020 average is −1.5 °C in January and 19.7 °C in July. Winters are grey, with snow some years; a proper winter coat and boots are worth buying locally in autumn.

Jobs

Warsaw has the largest concentration of international companies, banks and IT centres in Poland, so English-speaking part-time work and internships are easier to find than elsewhere. Read the rules on working while studying first: at private universities your work rights depend on the university's place on the MSWiA register.

Indian community

The Embassy of India estimates about 30,000 Indians in Poland and more than 100 Indian restaurants, with Warsaw the main centre. Indian groceries, temples and student associations are easiest to find here. See Indian community in Poland.
