Medicine in Poland: How the Six-Year MD in English Is Structured, Year by Year

The Polish MD (lekarz) is a six-year, long-cycle master's degree that leads straight from school to a medical diploma. Its structure is set nationally, so the English programmes at all eleven universities on our list follow the same pattern: preclinical science, clinical rotations and a practical final year.

The course, year by year

  • Years 1–2, preclinical: anatomy with dissection, histology and embryology, biochemistry, physiology, biophysics, genetics, first aid and Polish.
  • Year 3, bridging: pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, immunology, and the first bedside teaching in internal medicine.
  • Years 4–5, clinical: rotations in internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, neurology, psychiatry, dermatology, ophthalmology, ENT, infectious diseases and others.
  • Year 6, practical: work on hospital wards in the main specialties, often with a final examination.

Between years, students do a summer placement of about a month in hospitals or primary care. At Wrocław Medical University these follow each of years one to five.

Graduates take the LEK, the national final medical exam (available in English), and a postgraduate internship of about 13 months to be licensed in Poland. English-track graduates must also pass a Polish-language exam. Those returning to India take FMGE (later NExT).

The medical course in Poland: Frequently Asked Questions

What do you study in the first years of medicine in Poland?

Anatomy, histology, biochemistry, physiology, biophysics, genetics and microbiology, with early clinical skills and Polish language classes.

When do clinical rotations start?

Usually from year three, with internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry and other specialties, in the university's teaching hospitals.

Is the sixth year practical?

Yes. The final year is mostly spent working with patients in hospital departments, and at Wrocław and Bydgoszcz it ends with a final examination.

Do I need to learn Polish during the MD?

Yes. Patients in Polish hospitals speak Polish, and universities teach it in the early years. It also matters for the licence in Poland.
